Concrete never looked so shapely. Danish architects Per Dombernowsky and Asbjørn Søndergaard are milling concrete structures using computer numerical control (CNC) technology. The results...stunning designs, strong engineering, and super efficiency. By placing the concrete only where it is structurally needed, they achieve both an artistic statement and minimal use of materials, in some cases 60% less material. The final outcome could resemble an organic structure (such as the structure pictured above) or a more formal coffered ceiling. The multi-institution collaboration, Unikabeton, is just getting started so we look forward to seeing more structures and applications in the near future.
