SeanChron | Getting Future-ish on Project Runway

Yes, I'm addicted to another season of Project Runway...I'm writing of Project Runway, Season 13. I'm already loving this season because of the design-culture confluence and now that confluence just got turned up a notch.

I am moved to writing because Episode 3, "Past, Present, and Future" was such a letdown. Almost all the designs were major downers. Several of the designs were nice but they were far from meeting the challenge of creating a design for the cover of Marie Claire magazine 20 years in the future. EXCEPT for Indian designer Sadhya Garg. Sadhya's was clearly the only design with any sort of vision of future fashion. Sure it was a little odd and a lot risky but her dress ended up winning so her creativity and boldness paid off.

Futurazzi | Rachel McAdams in Future-ish Roksanda Ilincic

We're always on the watch for fashion with a future-ish flair. Our latest find is actress Rachel McAdams at the August 2013 premier of her movie, About Time, at Somerset House in London. The pale lavender gown is by Serbian designer, Roksanda Ilincic and features a very futuristic hologram belt along with surprise blue and aqua stripes on the back of the dress.

Haute Couture Technology

We love it when worlds collide and create something fabulous. Take for example, the cover of the March 9, 2013 issue of Science News, Made to Measure. The issue feature explores the state of 3D printing, which is also fabulous, but it is the fashion model striking a pose in the 3D haute couture on the cover that jumped out at us. Fashion (and everything else) forward indeed.

Iris van Herpen

Dutch fashion designer Iris Van Herpen is far and above one of our favorite designers here at Future-ish. Not only is her aesthetic light years ahead of other designers, her textiles, techniques, and styling also seem to come from some future century. From 3D printers to innovative processes that create unique fabrics, van Herpen continues to deliver stunning collections that make us imagine a truly inspired present and future.

Pure Pattern with Peter Pilotto

Our latest couture crush is on fashion house Peter Pilotto. Comprised of Peter Pilotto and Christopher De Vos, the label has become well known for its geometric patterns, sculpted lines, and futuristic silhouettes that are somehow completely reimagined each season.

Holly Fulton's 22nd Century Fashion

There is fashion forward and then there is fashion WAY forward. The designs of London-based Holly Fulton are definitely in the latter category. Fulton has consistently cast her "Fulton ladies" in bold graphics, deco designs, and striking metal and gem bling. Fashionistas probably see Egypt, art deco, and old Hollywood in her work but being design AND science geeks here at Future-ish, we see future retro with references to Bladerunner, Battlestar Galactica (both the original and the remake), and Stargate. Fabulous, striking, inspired. We can't wait for more.
