Gene Watch - Venter' synthetic life

In May of 2010, genomics guru Craig Ventner announced that his lab had sucessfully designed, constructed, and transplanted the first self-replicating, synthetic bacterial cell. In other words, the team successfully created synthetic life. The little cell that could, named Mycoplasma mycoides, is certainly just the beginning of a new era in genetic engineering. Venter alread sees the technology providing solutions for everything from biofuels to medicine. We were pleased to see that Venter's Institute has both a Options for Governance and Policy Center page.
