Fresh Design for Kids - No Screen Required

The first year of IxDA Awards contains a plethora of fresh, evolutionary ideas on everything from disruptive technology to new ways to connect with people. Voting is currently open for the People's Choice Awards and on that list are several ideas focusing on a topic near and dear to my heart ... using technology and design to find new ways to help kids learn and fun without necessarily sitting in front of a screen. The Future: What Children Want From Technology

Latitude Research interviewed 201 children from around the world in 2010, asking them a variety of questions centered around their expectations of technology in the future. The study doesn't delve really deeply (i.e. don't worry, the PDF of the study is a handfull of slides) but provides some interesting insight into children's expectations depending on where they live. Hex Watch - Porcelain Hexagonal Vase

The hive shape lends itself well to the Etsy aesthetic and there are any number of hexagon-patterned goodies there, but I just fell in love with this subtle use of our shape of choice. Love the color and the soft porcelain texture of this vase from Janson Pottery.

Hex Watch: Wooly Walls

Our hexigon crush continues. Born of a fantastic collaboration between Träullit and design studio Form Us With Love, these lovely hexagons are a perfect combination of form and function. Comprised of a recyclable material made with wood wool, cement and water, the Dekor form a sort of multi-tasking material for adorning walls. The material is moisture-regulating, heat-accumulating and fire resistant (just to name a few!) and because the hexagons are also sound-absorbing, they are ideal for helping improve acoustics in residential and industrial spaces. Here's to the future of modern, sustainable design!
