Sceleb | Emily Calandrelli

Emily Calandrelli (aka "The Space Gal") is an American aeronautics engineer, television host, and advocate for STEM subjects (science, technology, engineering, and math). She is the host and producer of FOX's Xploration Outer Space and a correspondent on Bill Nye Saves the World in addition to working for Discovery News and TechCrunch.

Calandrelli received Bachelor of Science degrees in Aerospace Engineering and Mechanical Engineering from West Virgina University (WVU). During her undergraduate years, she took time off to work in the Disney College Program at Walt Disney World which sparked an interest in themepark ride design. She also took participated in two NASA internship programs while she was an undergraduate. In her 4th year at WVU, Calendrelli received the Truman Scholarshiop and in her 5th year, the Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship. Calandrelli then went on to the Massachusetts Institute of Technology to earn a Masters in Aeronautics and Astronautics and a Masters in Technology and Policy where she received the Rene H. Miller Prize for her work systems engineering work.

Calandrelli was named our Queen of the Smart Set for 2017.

Back in July 2013, we put in a little plug for Matthew Frederick's 101 Things I Learned book series. I became a huge fan instantly. Now that I've spent some time with all the books, I wanted to do a 'mini-review' of each book to share some thoughts. I say 'mini-review' because the books are all all quite short and sweet with small tidbits of info. That in itself might be hard to review, other than saying "I love each and every page". But the fact that the series and each book is so well thought out and so well designed, leads me to believe that each individual book does deserve its own review...and, more importantly, a chance for me to express how much I love the particular book being reviewed.

In this case I'm sharing some thoughts on 101 Things I Learned in Engineering School authored by John Kuprenas with Matthew Frederick. Like all the books in the series, 101 Things I Learned in Engineering School offers both eye candy (great design) and brain candy (valuable and interesting information).

What is unique about this particular book is how successful Kuprenas and Frederick are at presenting what can often be very complex ideas and information. Engineering is not always the most interesting of subjects and certainly not the most accessible to diverse audiences. But Kuprenas and Frederick to exactly that. From short, inspiring quotes and simple, esthetically appealing graphics to mini history lessons and presentations of engineering theory in mainstreet vocabulary, the authors invite readers into an intimate discussion of engineering...over coffee at your favorite cafe. Even the design of the book, from it's small format size (app. 5" x 7") to it's individual pages, with their 1/2" black border along the binding, adds to this comfy vibe.

In short, if you are a science and/or a design geek...get this book. Get all the books in the series. Its a great gift for yourself and certainly for the smarty in your life.

101 Things I Learned is a book series that offers inside scoop on the what the future holds for budding professionals across a range of industries. The books provide sage advice, concise summaries, and lots of tidbits on the reality of training and working in each of the respective fields. A great guide for someone who is considering one of the industries and a great gift too.

Big Brain Challenges on Discovery

The Discovery Channel's lineup of new shows just keeps getting better. Premiering May 1, 2013 is their challenge-based reality show The Big Brain Theory: Pure Genius hosted by actor, producer, and public servant Kal Penn. The series features engineering challenges that push the contestants' science and design skills to max. With $50,000 at stake and a one year contract to work at WET, a leading design and engineering firm of large-scale water features such as the Fountains of Bellagio in Las Vegas.

Monster Role Model

Ramer started playing piano at five and took an interest in cars and engines about the same time alongside her Father, Kelvin Ramer who owns a auto towing company and drives monster trucks as well. Her own monster truck career started at age 14. What is most impressive is that Ramer plans to use the money she makes from driving the monster trucks to pursue an engineering degree at Stanford. Now at age 15, Ramer is the youngest professional female monster truck driver in the world and with the slogan "Living the Dream and chasing after more", she's out to prove that with a lot of hard work, anything is possible. RobotWatch | Achilles Walks the Walk

University of Arizona robotics engineers Theresa Klein and Anthony Lewis published a paper in the July 2012 issue of Journal of Engineering on their robot Achilles that has mastered the art and science of walking. Achilles doesn't just walk like a human though, the the robot has neural and musculoskeletal features that are based on human biology and mobility as well. That's one small step for man, one giant leap for robots.

Elephant-inspired Robotic Arm
