2011 Stylish Scientist List

Navigate: Home | Full List - Women | Full List - Men | Nominations
Annual Lists: 2011 | 2012 | 2013 | 2014 | 2015 | 2016 | 2017 | 2018

October 1, 2011. Future-ish is pleased to announce our first annual list of the world's top ten most stylish scientists. The individuals on our list are changing the world with their innovative research and changing stereotypes every time they make an appearance expressing their oh-so-stylish selves. Gone are the days of scientists in corduroy, sandals, and turtlenecks. Today's scientists are as inspiring in front of the camera as they are in their respective research fields. Unlike a simple 'best dressed' list, our Stylish Scientist List isn't about trends and expensive labels, its about individuals expressing themselves and their individuality in their life and work. In launching the annual Stylish Scientist List, we hope that these high-profile role models will inspire everyone, from middle schoolers and the Mom next door to movie stars and musicians, to become inspired, informed, and engaged in the many and diverse fields of science, technology, engineering, and math that are shaping our future.

Want to nominate a stylish scientist for our next list? Simply send an email with a pic and short bio of the scientist (self-nominations are fab too) to studioF/at/future-ish/dot/com

The Perfect Panel

We're dreaming up a fabulous event series here at Future-ish in which we invite a scientist, designer, and cultural leader to participate in a discussion about the key factors and trends they feel are shaping the future. The series is still very much in the works but in the mean time, we wanted to collect suggestions for a 'perfect panel' of science, design, and culture. Below is our running list. We did notice that many of our very own Scelebs, Design Idols, and Culture Icons showed up on several occasions - and in different slots - so that was a nice surprise. If you have suggestions for the 'perfect panel', shoot us an email at info|at|future-ish|dot|com.

Design Idol & Sceleb | Neri Oxman

Gracing the June 2009 cover of Fast Company Magazine as one of their 100 Most Creative People in Business is modern science and design diva, Neri Oxman. Although her early studies were in medicine and technology, after a degree in architecture she's now focused her keen mind on the science and design of materials and processes in what she describes as 'materialecology'. When she's not busy as a Presidential Fellow at the MIT Media Lab you might find her preparing for an opening of her artwork at MoMA, chatting with Vogue and Interview for upcoming articles, or lecturing at another major university somewhere in the world. Best of all, her work to improve industrial materials and processes is inspired by nature and ecology which explains why she wins awards in both design and sustainability. A scientist as cover girl leads us at Future-ish to propose two hypotheses: 1. smart is sexy and 2. smart is the new black. Watch out Tyra and Cindy, the era of glamour geeks has arrived.
